Call it serendipity or genius, but when four legends of Texas music pooled their talents in December 1989, a new sound was born: the Texas Tornados. Freddy Fender. Doug Sahm. Augie Meyers. Flaco Jimenez. Four careers' worth of Texas music royalty, united on a single stage - and on October 16, 1990, just one year into their run, they took that stage at Austin City Limits and delivered a performance for the ages.Fender was already a mega-star behind "Wasted Days and Wasted Nights" and "Before the Next Teardrop Falls." Sahm and Meyers had built their legend with the Sir Douglas Quintet in San Antonio, combining psychedelia, Gulf Coast blues, and spicy conjunto into a sound that shook up the pop charts with "She's About a Mover." And Flaco Jimenez, alongside his father and brother, had helped invent an entire genre - blending Mexican Norteño music with German and Czech polkas and waltzes into something completely his own. Together, they were unstoppable. The 19-song set sweeps through Tex-Mex, blues, country, rock and roll, and conjunto with the loose, joyful energy of a band still reveling in the magic of what they'd created. From the bilingual tenderness of "She Never Spoke Spanish to Me" to the barn-burning finale of "She's About a Mover" and "96 Tears, " every song crackles with the chemistry of four old friends who knew exactly how lucky they were to be sharing that stage. This Tex-Mex revue created a raucous, infectious, danceable sound that ranks as an all-time Austin City Limits favorite. Now on vinyl for the first time, it sounds exactly like it was always meant to.
