On June 26th, Susumu Yokota's 1994 masterpiece 'Acid Mt. Fuji' will be reissued as a deluxe 3-LP set in celebration of the original label's 30th anniversary. Japan's music scene, particularly it's techno label Sublime, released this album on June 29, 1994, alongside Ken Ishii's 'Reference To Difference. ' 'Acid Mt. Fuji' blends mystical ambient acid and futuristic minimal techno, inviting listeners on a psychedelic pilgrimage with reverb echoes, forest recordings, 303 synths, and electronic percussion. This album, a unique blend of early '90s Western styles and the essence of Yokota's native Japan, merges Japanese new age and sparse electronic music, resulting in a free, organic, and energetic recording. Initially planning an ambient record, Yokota evolved 'Acid Mt. Fuji' into a concept work featuring the Roland TB-303, recorded live at his home with a sampler. Inspired by the famous 'Red Fuji' by the renowned 18th-19th century artist Hokusai, known as part of his 'Thirty-Six Views of Mount Fuji' series, this extended player captures the sacred red-glowing mountain at dawn, symbolizing spirituality, and creativity. Tracks like 'Kinoko' and 'Meijijingu' reference Japanese folklore, nature, and shrines, drawing listeners into the album's spiritual depths. Yokota's homage to Hokusai adorns the record cover, highlighting his diverse skills as a musician, artist, and designer. 'Acid Mt. Fuji' is a testament to the establishment of Japan's rave culture, which rapidly developed between 1992 and 1994. The LP's remarkable originality was highly praised within this emerging domestic techno scene, positioning Yokota as a key figure. He later became one of the most prominent artists to emerge from Japan and join the global electronic music pantheon. Yokota inspired a new wave of Japanese producers and DJs, significantly contributing to the growth of Japan's techno movement. He was a solitary artist who expressed his life through the continuous creation of music. For those seeking something different, this mystical, soothing, perfectly harmonious, and uniquely Japanese record is as iconic as Mount Fuji itself. This triple vinyl deluxe edition includes the original album's 11 tracks, plus five previously unreleased rare versions from the 2016 Japanese deluxe edition CD, now available on vinyl for the first time. Additionally, it features two digital-only bonus tracks. One is a live performance of 'Live at Shibuya Beam Hall, ' recorded at the Sublime Records label launch party in September 1994. Titled 'Sublime Records Presents New Style of Electronic Ambient Party, ' the event featured performances by Susumu Yokota, Ken Ishii, Yoshihiro Sawasaki, Speedy J, and DJ Wada. This rare 10-minute live recording captures Yokota performing a dynamic, fast-paced acid house live jam using two TB-303s and a drum machine. The other digital-only bonus track is an alternate version of 'H' recently unearthed from a DAT tape. The liner notes are written by DJ/producer Alex from Tokyo, who experienced Tokyo's club scene in the '90s firsthand as an insider. His compilation 'Japan Vibrations Vol. 1' captures this golden era, featuring music by Prism (Susumu Yokota), Ryuichi Sakamoto, Haruomi Hosono, Yasushi Shimizu, and Quadra (Hiroshi Watanabe).
