Corey Mackey and Keith Lienert's new album, Escape, explores the variety of colors created by the unique timbres of the clarinet and percussion. Over a two-year period, Mackey and Lienert sought to expand the repertoire of this instrumentation by commissioning new pieces from contemporary composers. Escape features two brand new works, Spiritual Adaptations to Higher Altitudes by William Neil for clarinet and vibraphone and Nathan Daughtrey's Verve for bass clarinet and marimba. Additionally, the recording features works by young, up-and-coming composers William A.R. May and Ashot Kartalyan. While originally written for alto saxophone and marimba, Marc Mellits' Escape was re-written for clarinet and marimba in 2018 and provides the title track to this new album.
