When composer, lyricist, vocalist, and multi-instrumentalist Otrebor created the San Francisco based band in 2009, he already had a specific lyrical concept in mind that has persisted to permeate all releases until and including today. The songs of this project are told from the perspective of a protagonist called "The Botanist", who is characterised as a crazed man of science that lives in self-imposed exile, as far away from Humanity and it's crimes against Nature as possible. In his sanctuary of fantasy and wonder, which he calls "The Verdant Realm", "The Botanist" surrounds himself with plants and flowers to find solace in the company of the Natural world, while he envisions the destruction of mankind. BOTANIST's lyrics are equally informed by scientific nomenclature as they are inspired by Romantic-era poetry, art, and philosophy. BOTANIST are different also in musical terms. In a striking departure from traditional metal instrumentation, Otrebor uses distorted hammered dulcimers instead of guitars. This also makes BOTANIST the first band to adapt magnetic pickups to hammered dulcimer, and perform on stage. Stylistically, the Americans pay tribute to the mentality of some of the pioneering Scandinavian black metal bands' connection to nature, before spinning the dark yarn into new sonic and emotional fabrics. To BOTANIST, the black metal trope about misanthropy and of being alone in the forest is in fact about the woods and it's floral inhabitants themselves. Each named plant becomes it's own character in the ever growing pantheon of the project's "green metal" discography. BOTANIST sprouted from the seed of their debut double-album "I: The Suicide Tree / II: A Rose from the Dead" (2011) into a tripartite sapling with the addition of "III: Doom in Bloom" (2012). From this early growth, their sprawling discography developed into several directions with two further solo-albums forming the stems: "IV: Mandragora" (2013) and "VI: Flora" (2014). In addition to the albums, Otrebor also released several EPs. When the mastermind started to work with a constantly mutating line-up in studio and on stage, he switched from Roman numbers to the marker "Collective", which appears on the following albums, "Collective: The Shape of He to Come" (2017) and "Collective: Setlist 2017" (2017). Feeling that this system was too 'clunky', the "collective" version of BOTANIST released the next three full-length albums under the simple titles "Ecosystem" (2019), "Ecosystem Version B" (2020), and "Photosynthesis" (2020). The album's eight tracks each deal with an aspect of photosynthesis, from the macro "Water" to the micro "Palisades," which reflects the theme of botanical lungs on a microscopic level. The album culminates with "Oxygen," holding high the imagery of "Verdant Alveolus Diaspora," the album's core visual theme, depicting the world's forests as a functioning lung system's individual cells, scattered throughout the globe.
Photosynthesis is the fourth "collective" album in Botanist's greater discography, meaning it is composed of a group of individuals. Band originator Otrebor (hammered dulcimers, vocals, keyboards) composed the music and lyrics to the drums of returning member Daturus (Botanist's live drummer since 2017, who played on 2019's Ecosystem) and new bassist Tony Thomas.
Photosynthesis sees Botanist returning to The Flenser stable, whose partnership yielded three albums, including 2014's VI: Flora, perhaps the project's most noteworthy work.
This release was recorded in the Verdant Realm in California. The album production was handled by Dan Swanö, a musician whose legend is equally for his enormous contributions to the Swedish melodic and progressive death metal scenes in the '90s and '00s, as he is for his output of top-shelf album productions from his Unisound studio. The application of Swanö's creative genius in more artistic, avant-garde areas of the metal spectrum is a match of dreams for Botanist, resulting in an album that achieves a new level of the project's expanding vision with production excellence.

Track List

Light

Water

Chlorophyll

Dehydration

Bacteria

Stroma

Palisade

Oxygen

Shop online 24/7 at Darkside Records.

Follow us on Instagram.

On their twelfth full-length "Paleobotany", Botanist take us back more than 70 million years to a time when dinosaurs ruled the planet and early forests began to turn to coal. "Paleobotany" comes with all the trademark characteristics that set Botanist apart from all other metal acts on this planet. Currently, BOTANIST are preparing for the recording of their tenth full-length. Tracklist: CD 1 I: The Suicide Tree 1. Dragocephalum 2. Invoke The Throne Of Velthemia 3. Helleborus Niger 4. Whorl 5. The application of Swanö's creative genius in more artistic, avant-garde areas of the metal spectrum is a match of dreams for Botanist, resulting in an album that achieves a new level of the project's expanding vision with production excellence.

Tracklist:

Light

Water

Chlorophyll

Dehydration

Bacteria

Stroma

Palisade

Oxygen

UPC > 767870662843

Format > New CD

Label > Flenser

Shop online at Darkside Records.

Follow us on Instagram.

2CD book edition (hardcover, 18x18cm, 36 pages), enhanced artwork, includes exclusive bonus companion album. Only a very few original metal acts emerge each decade from the mass of bands that are stylistically easy to label. BOTANIST are both in musical and lyrical aspects one of those unique bands that are obviously different. Now, the act's eleventh full-length, "VIII: Selenotrope" is announced. On the eighth solo album by the project, and the first since "VI: Flora" (2014), mastermind Otrebor again sends sprigs into new sonic directions. Although the band's roots in black metal still shimmer through the dense foliage, this sprawling, straggling, blooming creation is an exuberantly growing, varied musical meditation. "The title "VIII: Selenotrope" refers to plants that flower in moonlight. BOTANIST's characteristic sound of the hammered dulcimer combines perfectly with now predominantly clean vocals that are often arranged into multi-layered choirs, resulting in an entangling, highly dynamic album that comes together in a singular piece of music seemingly taking influence from all avant-garde, progressive, experimental, post-metal, and other possible descriptions - the validity of which very much depends on each individual listener. "VIII: Selenotrope" is not made to fit into just one drawer." All songs of this project are told from the perspective of a protagonist called "The Botanist". He is characterised as a crazed man of science that lives in self-imposed exile, as far away from Humanity and it's crimes against Nature as possible. In his sanctuary of fantasy and wonder, which he calls "The Verdant Realm", "The Botanist" surrounds himself with plants and flowers to find solace in the company of the natural world, while he envisions the destruction of mankind. Seated upon his throne of Veltheimia, "The Botanist" awaits the time of humanity's self-eradication, which will allow plants to cover planet Earth in green once again. BOTANIST's lyrics are equally informed by scientific nomenclature as they are inspired by Romantic-era poetry, art, and philosophy. In a striking departure from traditional metal instrumentation, Otrebor uses distorted hammered dulcimers instead of guitars All BOTANIST albums bearing Roman numbers are solo-recording by Otrebor., which includes "VIII: Selenotrope". After successfully working with Swedish mixing and mastering specialist Dan Swanö for the previous album "Photosynthesis", Otrebor decided to continue the collaboration for "VIII: Selenotrope". The result is a stunningly beautiful new branch in the BOTANIST evolution. Yet in an unexpected twist, "VIII: Selenotrope" blooms not only at night, but also shines as a radiant musical flower in broad daylight.

Tracklist:

Against the Selenic Light

Risen from the Rain

Epidendrum Nocturnum

Mirabilis

Angel's Trumpet

Selenotrope

Sword of the Night

The Flowering Dragon

Moonflower I

Moonflower II

Moonflower III

Moonflower IV

Moonflower V

Moonflower VI

Moonflower VII

Moonflower VIII

On their twelfth full-length "Paleobotany", Botanist take us back more than 70 million years to a time when dinosaurs ruled the planet and early forests began to turn to coal. "Paleobotany" comes with all the trademark characteristics that set Botanist apart from all other metal acts on this planet. Lyrically, the band from San Francisco, CA revolves around species of plants - in a clean break from the usual genre stereotypes like Satan, dragons, and booze. Their music clearly has it's foundation anchored in 'metal', but instead of 6-string guitars the Americans use 110-string hammered dulcimers. To the confused horror of traditionalists, Botanist fit these percussion-stringed folk instruments with magnetic pickups and distort them through various perverse means that range from amplifiers via analogue tape to digital manipulation.
