His Opus 1 \"Abegg\" Variations, in triple-time throughout and brimming with elegant fioritura, form one of a pair of waltz bookends to the Chopin set and begin this recital with an exhilarating take-off. \r\n\r\nOn the other side of the Chopin set and leading the waltz suavely into the 20th-century is Maurice Ravel's cycle of eight Valses nobles et sentimentales, again organised to contrast vigorous (noble) numbers with evocative (sentimental) counterparts in an eclectic blend of Impressionism and Modernism, but this time according to the composer's own design. \r\n\r\nA lovely postlude comes in the form of La plus que lente, in which Ravel's fellow impressionist Claude Debussy crafts a harmonically sumptuous ode to the \"slow waltz\" (valse lente) steeped in languid nostalgia. \r\n\r\nPeter Donohoe's acclaimed discography of previous SOMM releases includes the complete cycle of Prokofiev Piano Sonatas and a complete survey of Mozart's Piano Sonatas - Volume 1 of the Mozart series was named a BBC Music Magazine \"Recording of the Month\", citing \"a gloves-off spontaneity that imbues these magical scores with a compelling vitality and freshness\". Extraordinarily, this is a first recording of Hummel's 'Military' Quintet.' It is an amazing find by the virtuoso double-bass player Leon Bosch, Artistic Director of the mixed-instrument chamber ensemble I Musicanti, with whom he performs here. They're joined by Peter Donohoe, laureate of the Tchaikovsky Competition and acclaimed as one of the foremost pianists of our time.\r\n\r\nJohann Nepomuk Hummel's gift as a composer was matched by his excellence as a pianist. A child prodigy, Hummel was taught and housed by Mozart for two years, and he studied further with Clementi, Haydn, Albrechtsberger, and Salieri. Hummel's mastery as a pianist and his compositional personality, admired by Liszt, shine through in his two piano septets featuring winds, brass, and strings, which he also arranged for a combination not uncommon at the time of piano, violin, viola, cello, and double bass.\r\n\r\nIt was in October 1829, nearly a year after Schubert's death, that Hummel completed his 'Military' Piano Septet No. 2. For publication in Vienna the following year, he also prepared a piano quintet version, again arranged for that ensemble of piano, violin, viola, cello, and double bass. The Septet's scoring-for piano, flute, clarinet, trumpet, violin, cello, and double bass- already included four of the five of those instruments, so in effect the alternate version redistributes the wind and brass parts among four strings with added viola. It is this version that receives it's premiere recording on this release. \r\n\r\nFranz Schubert's Trout Quintet came about during a walking holiday in the Alps in 1819, when he made the acquaintance of Sylvester Paumgartner, an amateur cellist who promoted chamber concerts in his home. He greatly admired Schubert's lied, Die Forelle (\"The Trout\"), and he commissioned a set of variations based on the song's melody. At the time, Paumgartner had brought together a group of musicians to perform Hummel's Piano Quintet in E flat minor-the arrangement Hummel made of his first piano septet-and suggested that Schubert write his new variations for that same quintet ensemble of pianist, violinist, violist, cellist, and double bass player. Schubert being Schubert, he not only composed a set of five variations on Die Forelle, but he created a five-movement quintet that featured the variations as the fourth movement of a work that has become one of the most renowned and beloved in the chamber repertoire. It is Schubert's first mature chamber work. Composed between 1905 and 1909, the collection is divided into four books, each containing three pieces. Book I opens with 'evocation', which combines the southern Spanish fandango with jota song forms. 'El Puerto' was inspired by El Puerto de Santa Maria, in Cadiz, whilst 'Fete-dieu a Seville' depicts the Corpus Christi Day procession. 'Rondeña' and then 'Almeria' are both depictions of Andalusian towns, and are followed by 'Triana', which evokes the Gypsy quarter of Seville. Goyescas, begun in 1909, reflects Granados's admiration for the paintings of Goya. (Granados went on to compose an opera of the same name). Considered by many to be Granados's masterpiece, the suite for piano comprises two books and was completed in 1911. The collections by Albeniz and Granados are truly virtuosic pieces, placing extreme demands on the pianist. Peter Donohoe makes light work of the challenges, and presents his selection in deeply musical readings that are typical of this supreme artist. Donohoe's personal selections represent works which have always resonated very much with him as well as representing some of the most challenging, unique, and significant repertoire for piano ever written.The most substantial works in this collection are the Preludes, Op. 28, whose technical demands place them firmly amongst Chopin's most virtuosic works. Although Chopin did not necessarily intend for all 24 Preludes-one in each key-to be played as a group, they are performed here as a complete cycle, which makes for a fascinating and satisfying listening experience. Chopin wrote a further single Prelude, Op. 45, which is a longer and more detailed study than the individual numbers in the Opus 28 set, with the exception of the \"Raindrop\" Prelude.Chopin's Barcarolle, Op. 60, inspired by the rocking rhythm of the traditional folk song sung by Venetian gondoliers, is another of his more demanding compositions. It is also one of his last major compositions, along with his Polonaise-Fantasie, Op. 61. Chopin's distinctive sound often includes the national flavour of his native Poland, and this piece takes it's character from the Polish dance, while the fantasie provides it's harmonic complexity and intricate form.For Peter Donohoe, the 2 Nocturnes, Op. 62 are the culmination of the musical form, these intimately expressive works being Chopin's final compositions in the genre. The 3 ecossaises, Op. 72 No. 3, which close this recital, were amongst the first pieces Donohoe ever knew, and were therefore seminal for him.
