She recorded \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cb\u003ethe Pogues’ \u003c\/b\u003e\u003cspan\u003e“Pair of Brown Eyes,” which she calls one of her favorite songs of all time, after it reminded her of one friend who passed from cancer and turned to \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cb\u003eBob Seger’s \u003c\/b\u003e\u003cspan\u003e“Against the Wind” to help her heal from the loss of another.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003cspan\u003e \u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003c\/span\u003e\u003cspan\u003eAlongside covers of rock-and-roll icons from \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cb\u003eNico \u003c\/b\u003e\u003cspan\u003eto \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cb\u003eNick Cave\u003c\/b\u003e\u003cspan\u003e, Marshall brings her inimitable vocal power and elegant arrangements to songs by contemporary artists, capturing the defiance of \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cb\u003eDead Man’s Bones’ \u003c\/b\u003e\u003cspan\u003e“Pa Pa Power” and the dreaminess of \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cb\u003eLana Del Rey’s \u003c\/b\u003e\u003cspan\u003e“A White Mustang.” And the album opens with a dazzling cover of \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cb\u003eFrank Ocean’s \u003c\/b\u003e\u003cspan\u003e“Bad Religion,” of which she says, “I believe in whatever God is called… But I think that the wretched men that have come in history to implement horror on humanity in the name of these religions is something that should be looked at universally.”\u003c\/span\u003e\u003cspan\u003e \u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003c\/span\u003e\u003cspan\u003eFinally, Covers finds Marshall, an artist of constant evolution, reworking “Hate,” a song from her 2006 LP The Greatest on which she sang “I hate myself and I want to die.” Marshall says she has always felt “antsy” about the track and reimagined it as “Unhate,” a new version that looks back on the raw devastation of the original track in the rearview. “We all have bad days,” she says. “We all have shit, trauma, something. There are times when you feel like that.
