Absolutely Fabulous Complete Series 2
Arriving a little more than a year after its predecessor, the second season of the BBC1 comedy Absolutely Fabulous pushes its already outrageous characters to even more grotesque extremes. Whether disrupting her father's funeral with her drunken, selfish theatrics or selling her daughter into slavery on another disastrous vacation, Edina (series creator Jennifer Saunders) continues to live up -- actually, down -- to the behavioral standards of Patsy (Joanna Lumley), her hedonistic fellow '60s survivor. Already an established hit, the show was able to attract even more celebrity cameos during its second run. In one installment, such prestigious British thespians as Helena Bonham Carter and Richard E. Grant appear in a freakish dream sequence. Former teen pop idol Lulu also makes the first of several appearances as herself. As usual, though, it's the rich day-to-day supporting cast that provides a credible backdrop to Pats and Eddy's antics: Julia Sawalha, as put-upon daughter Saffy; Jane Horrocks, as hapless PA Bubble; and June Whitfield, as serenely spacy Gran. Though some early fans complained about the show's increasingly over-the-top tone, Absolutely Fabulous would continue to alternate between sly cultural commentary and elaborate slapstick throughout its many additional incarnations.
