LIVE AT THE BERLIN JAZZ DAYS 1980 - LEE KONITZ - Reissue of a duo album of the highest calibre, which was originally released by MPS in 1982. US Alto saxophonist Lee Konitz's career encompassed the beginnings of bebop, cool jazz, and mainstream, as well as the Avant-garde. Konitz has recorded with virtually every major modern jazz figure of the last 60 years, from Miles Davis and his seminal Birth of the Cool album, Charles Mingus, Gil Evans, Brad Mehldau, to Bill Frisell and Paul Motian. French-Algerian pianist Martial Solal has been a major musical voice since the 1950's. Born in 1927, the same year as Konitz, the 93-year-old Solal and his ferocious virtuoso technique was the perfect foil for Konitz's cerebral, introspective play. The two had a rich musical relationship from the late 1960's on, as they toured together throughout the US and Europe. This album, recorded at the Berlin Jazz Days 1980 was conceived in part as a "Lennie Tristano Memorial". Lee's studies and playing experience with the iconoclastic pianist left an indelible imprint on the saxophonist's concept and allowed him to develop a unique style that offered an alternate musical vision from that of his legendary contemporary, altoist Charlie Parker. Lee Konitz was 92 when he died in Manhattan on April 15, 2020 from complications caused by covid 19. Konitz always contended that he was "just a standards player", yet he also stated that "My playing was about making a personal statement - I wanted to play original music". Both were true - he transformed those standards into his personal vision, and in so doing has found his place in the jazz pantheon.Shop online at Darkside Records 24/7.

In order to ship your records to you in the safest way possible, and to avoid seam splits, we recommend removing the record from the jacket when shipping. That said, we will never open sealed records and do this without your permission. If you would like your records shipped to you this way, please request this in the notes section of checkout. Please review our shipping policy (link below) for information on our shipping rates and import fees.
Free Shipping offer applies to US orders only. We will choose the most economical way to ship your items. If you have preorders in your cart, and opt for free shipping, all items will ship with the last remaining preorder in the order. Turntables/Speakers/Consoles are not eligible for free shipping.
All domestic Vinyl orders ship via UPS Ground (with the exception of PO Boxes, APO/FPO where we must choose USPS Priority) for a flat rate of $7.99 + $1 for each additional item. We take great care in our packaging to ensure orders arrive to you quickly and safely. Most orders are shipped within 24 hours of your order being placed (with some exceptions, e.g. post RSD when we have a massive influx of orders) and are packaged in Whiplash LP mailers that are specifically designed to protect your records. We use 100% recyclable packing materials, from paper tape to HexcelPack, to do our small part to cut out single-use plastics.
***Please note that we are not responsible for stolen packages and are not able to refund you for your purchase if your package was stolen after delivery. While we can help you file a claim, if UPS or Fedex deliver your package and take a proof of delivery photo, it is unlikely they will reimburse the missing package.
International Orders: Please note that taxes, fees and duties are worked into your shipping fees at checkout. We know and agree that international shipping rates are incredibly expensive. Unfortunately at this time we do not feel that USPS is a reliable option for us to ship international orders so our prices exclusively reflect those of UPS or Fedex. Please reach out to us with any questions.
> Due to the current limited nature of music titles and production issues, ALL CD & Vinyl purchases are limited to one copy per customer, per item. If you place multiple orders for the same title, your subsequent orders will be cancelled.
How We Ship
We take great pride in our packaging and have spent years honing it so that it is not only 100% recyclable materials, but also protects your records from the woes of being tossed from truck to truck during the shipping process.
