the album cover for Roy Williams - The Real Thing

An extremely talented vocalist and fine interpreter of jazz, R&B and pop music, Roy Williams started his professional career in Newport News, Virginia singing in a band called The Soul Sentinels. In 1967 Roy moved to Camden, New Jersey and appeared on radio and television where he became known as "Mahdi" Roy Williams. He sang with local soul bands such as The Amazing Ebonies and The Executive Suite, eventually becoming a member of the popular R&B band The Intruders - of which he became known as "The last voice of The Intruders." On his new solo album, entitled "The Real Thing," Roy effortlessly spans the divide between jazz and R&B covering standards from both genres. From pop jazz standards such as Errol Garner's "Misty" and the Gershwin classic "Summertime" to R&B gems like Lionel Ritchie's "Easy" or Ashford and Simpson's "Ain't Nothing Like The Real Thing," it's easy to see why journeyman vocalist Roy Williams is considered The Real Thing.
